Graceful in its simplistic shape with hand-carved lines, this petite pottery vase is made to show off your blooming garden buds. Each vase is wheel-thrown and hand-carved and is unique with minor individual variations in shape, color, and size.
Studio Pema is a one woman company run by Tomomi Uchiyama Freitas in Apex, North Carolina. Tomomi has made pottery for more than 15 years. She studied art in college, but began honing her pottery skills after graduation, focusing on wheel throwing and hand building. Tomomi uses tools like handmade stamps and vintage doilies to create texture to explore the relationship between the clay’s surface and the glaze. She finds inspiration in the Japanese philosophy of “wabi-sabi” (the concept of appreciating imperfections), and she takes pride in making each piece unique with individual variations in shape and size. Each item she makes is stamped with a lotus (or “pema” in Tibetan) maker’s mark, a symbol of purity of the body, speech, and mind.
Handmade in North Carolina.
